The spirituality of work and what to do in stressful situations will be addressed at the November 24 inaugural convention of Catholics in the Workplace (CiW).

Fr Robert Christo, Episcopal Vicar for Evangelisation, explained in a media release that the aim of this newly established group was to help Catholic workers to better appreciate how they could connect what they believed with how they lived. CiW emerged from a series of conversations with Catholic professionals started by former Vicar for Administration Msgr Jason Gordon, now the Bishop of Bridgetown and Kingstown, on the need for increased connectivity between their professional and spiritual lives.

Addressing The Spirituality of Work at this first annual convention of CiW will be Archbishop Joseph Harris, who will discuss Blessed Pope John Paul IIs encyclical Laborem Exercens On Human Work. The guest speaker is Fr Laurence Freeman OSB, Director of the World Community for Christian Meditation, who will speak on Meditation In Times of Anxiety.

In addition to group discussion and reflection, some Catholic professionals will give testimonials about opportunities and challenges they have faced in the workplace.

The CiW Core Team is comprised of individuals from the financial, consulting, academic and security fields. The virtual membership of CiW was close to 400 individuals, according to the release.

The CiW Core Team is extremely excited about the convention since it will be the first opportunity that its virtual membership has to interact with each other in person, the release added.

The convention takes place at NAPA, Port of Spain, from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. and the deadline for registration is November 20. The release said CiW hoped the convention would allow participants to reflect on God in the workplace; learn the teachings of the Church on work; experience one spiritual practice recommended by CiW; share experiences with each other; and network with fellow members of CiW.

Interested persons can register at the office of the Evangelisation Commission at the Catholic Centre, 1 Rene Street, Chaguanas, or by calling Barbara at 671-4177 or Margaret at 671-0133. The donation for the event is $150, which can be paid into the Republic Bank account of the Archbishop of POS Evangelisation Commission, account number 660157377501.
