CTN Postdoctoral Fellow: Dr. Thibault Mesplède
Dr. Thibault Mesplède studies the way HIV develops resistance to anti-HIV drugs. His research is on a new class of drugs called integrase inhibitors. These drugs are designed to block the integration of HIV viral genomes in the DNA of the host cell. Blocking this step prevents HIV from replicating and can halt the spread of the virus. Dr. Mesplède #39;s researches multiple subtypes of HIV, which is important because different areas of the world have different predominant subtypes. Instead of focusing only on subtype B, which is found in most Western countries, Dr. Mesplède focuses on several sub-types which are found in other regions hard hit by the HIV epidemic, such as Africa. Dr. Mesplède #39;s supervisor is Dr. Mark Wainberg at the Lady Davis Institute/McGill AIDS Centre. He is co-sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb and the CTN. http://www.hivnet.ubc.ca
