Gov. Inslee signs medical school bill

Governor Jay Inslee signed a bill Wednesday that repeals a law from 1917 which only allowed the University of Washington to run a medical school in the state. Now, Washington State University can do so as well.

Inslee described what happened as a "lifting of prohibition" on building schools, saying that 1917 bill that only allows the University of Washington to teach medical students only prevents this state from progressing. Legislators have called the lack of doctors in eastern Washington a crisis, and with the decision today we're one step closer to seeing medical students on WSU's Spokane campus in 2017.

As for who will fund these schools, there is a big divide in two different legislative bills. State republicans want to budget about five million dollars for WSU and UW's Spokane medical schools, while the democrats want nearly $16,000,000.

Either way, WSU President Elson Floyd says their program will be fine, and Governor Jay Inslee says the budget will be figured out soon. They say both programs will be "healthy."
