(WKTV) - A handful of Utica Comets left behind their hockey stick onFriday and hit the streets with the mayor to help keep the city clean.

The Quality of Life Sweep began at noon by the Parkway and the Comets joined later in the afternoon, even digging in their heels and pushing a broken-down care out of a yard. But the best part of the day, the Comets say, was talking to kids at Jones Elementary.

"I really enjoy coming to schools," said DustinJeffery, Utica Comets player. "I had a lot of teams and people that did that for us and it's people we look up to, and it makes an impact on the kids.So for us to go into the schools and connect with them that way, it's big.Doing the street sweeping, it's a cool task around the city, but the school visit really hits home."

The Quality of Life Sweeps happen weekly through November. Community members are welcome to join.
