OTTUMWA A very scary and dangerous event took place Thursday morning at Liberty Elementary School when a student was struck by a moving vehicle, but thankfully no one was seriously injured in the accident.

According to Dr. Davis Eidahl, Ottumwa Community School District superintendent, a fifth-grade female student was working safety patrol on one of the crosswalks outside the school. She apparently stepped away from where she was standing and was struck and knocked down by a vehicle.

Thankfully, though, the student was not seriously injured.

Eidahl said immediately after the accident observers in the traffic line called 911, and the schools office and the mother of the child were notified.

When the parent arrived at the scene, Eidahl said, she and Liberty staff assessed the young girl to see if she was injured before the ambulance crew arrived. Then, when the paramedics got there, professionals also made sure she wasnt seriously hurt before releasing the student to her mother.

We can all feel fortunate that she is safe, Eidahl said.

As far as the crosswalk goes, he said they will plan to not have students there in the future.

We are going to make some adjustments as far as that specific site, he said.

According to Eidahl, adults will be performing safety patrol at that crosswalk from now on, and the administration staff has met to review the schools pick-up and drop-off practices so everyone can remain safe.
