Spirituality in art lecture-tour series begins Feb. 19

The Search for the Spiritual in Art, an interfaith, inter-museum collaboration that begin in 1995, picks up again this year with a five-week series of Wednesday lectures and tours around the theme Spiritual Pilgrimage in Art.

Whether to Graceland or the Holy Land, pilgrimage captures the imagination of people of all faiths, says Abby Schwartz,interim director of the Skirball Museum at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

Two years ago the series explored the theme of music, worship and faith.

Dates and sites for this years program:

Feb. 19: Cincinnati Art Museum, 953 Eden Park Dr. Evening begins at 6 p.m. with a tour of relevant collections, then at 7 p.m. a talk from James Buchanan, director of the Brueggeman Center at Xavier University.

Feb. 26: Skirball Museum, 3101 Clifton Ave., Clifton. Begins at 6 p.m. with a self-guided tour of the museum, then discussion led by David Gitlitz, professor emeritus of Hispanic Studies at the University of Rhode Island.

March 5: Hindu Temple of Cincinnati, 4920 Klatte Rd., Union Twp., Clermont County. The program begins with a lecture by Swami Ishatmandana at 6:30 p.m. before a tour of the temple.

March 12: Taft Museum of Art, 316 Pike St., Downtown. Self-guided tour begins at 6 p.m. and a lecture by Caroline Hillard, part of the art history faculty of Wright State University, begins at 7 p.m.

March 19: Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati, 8092 Plantation Drive, West Chester. Program begins at 6:30 p.m. Author and filmmaker Michael Wolfediscusses Depicting the Hajj in Images and Words and a guided tour begins at 7:45 p.m.
