Mason takes title, Lakota West second

LIBERTY TWP.

The Mason Comets captured their fifth straight Greater Miami Conference wrestling championship on Saturday night at Lakota East.

For our seniors to win a GMC title their entire career is a big deal. Its been a long week but a rewarding week for our kids, Mason coach Craig Murnan said.

The Comets qualified as a team for the state tournament on Wednesday night. The GMC championship was a nice addition to the season.

The Comets, who won with 219 points, had their traditional green and white colors on display, along with bleached blonde hair that has become a wrestling tradition at Mason.

Robert Shephard, a state champion for us, started it seven or eight year ago and they do it this time of year to create unity, Murnan said.

The Comets captured five weight classes, beginning with Zack Dothan at 106 and Patrick Kearny at 113.

It is nice to win since I hadnt won since my freshman year. I was just going out and wrestling and trying to stay calm, what Ive been doing all year, Kearney said.

Masons other champions were Caleb Walden at 132 and Jordan Collins, who had a pin at 160.

We have a schedule that has challenged them all year and so we are getting to this point and seeing the rewards from it, Murman said.
