The future of Grey's Anatomy has never been more uncertain. We know that before season 16 even happened, season 17 was also greenlit, so we're safe for anotheryear at least. However, 17 seasons is an impressively long run and with this year's finale not playing out as planned due to the current pandemic, things feel very iffy indeed.

Throughout the course of Grey's Anatomy, we've had to get pretty used to major character exits. However, if season 17 is going to be the last, it's possible we actually get more returns than losses. Of course, some characters would be impossible to bring back and others may not be welcome after gettingfired for bad behaviour behind-the-scenes, but there are still quite a few characters who could totally make a comeback. Let's see who they are!

Nobody was more upset about April getting the boot than actress Sarah Drew herself. She explained to the Hollywood Reporter that she had been told there were just too many characters by season 14's end to keep her around. However, April got a lovely send off and technically as far as we know, she's not living too far from the hospital. Bringing her back would be a breeze.

Arizona quickly became a fan favorite the second she wheelied into our lives. The pediatric surgeon-turned fetal surgeon rockstar left so that she and Callie could raise their daughter together in New York. While many are still angry about Callie forcing such a thing on her, we'd be willing to forgive a lot for the chance to catch up with our girl.

Callie is as likely as Arizona to make a comeback. As far as we know, they're both living in New York, so really they're just a phone call away. Having Callie come back would be special and we'd love the chance to say a proper goodbye to baby girl Sofia, but we're hoping the writers know better than to have her pop up with Penny Blake in tow.

We haven't seen or heard from Stephanie Edwards since her heartbreaking season 13 finale/exit. As much as we loved the fact that she saved the day and ultimately decided to quit afterwards to travel the world, we feel as though we should get to see her again before the series wraps. Maybe not as a surgeon, but as an old friend.

Nathan would be an easy cameo if the writers decided to have him back. It wouldn't be too hard to write up a reason to have him and Megan fly in from California. However, out of all the potential returns, he's the one we'd be least excited about. His story wrapped up nicelyso what do we really need from him?

Alex Karev came very close to being the last one of Meredith's crew to end the thing by her side. However, as fans already know, he decided to make an abrupt exit this past season. To end the series without another appearance from Alex would be devastating, but Justin Chambers literally just quit, so we're not sure he'd be ready.

The reaction to the whole Alex-left-to-be-with-Izzie thing has been mixed. Nobody's been missing Izzie, but if the only way to have Alex come back for a visit is if she's there, we're guessing most fans would be ok with that. Can we all just imagine for a second how incredible it would be if she showed up and Jo somehow got 5 minutes alone with her...

Nurse Olivia was never a main character, but fans who have been following since the beginning would be able to spot her in an instant. She's also made a comeback before, having shown up briefly in the 14th season. We think it'd be a fun Easter egg to have her stop by.

Listen, we're not trying to tell Shonda Rhimes how to do her job, but if she doesn't bring Cristina back before the series finale, she should retire from show business. Cristina Yang is without a doubt the greatest character the show's ever had. She deserves to be there when Meredith's story finally finishes and we deserve to see her there!

Shane Ross would be an easy character to bring back if Cristina Yang is going to be flying in already. When she left to work in Switzerland, he went with her. Of course, nobody was too torn up about losing the guy, but if he wants to tag along, sure we'll catch up!

Fans were pretty floored when Preston Burke made his brief return in season10. His story wrapped up well, so it would be interesting to see how they'd even go about writing him back into the show. We could maybe imagine him popping in on Cristina just to see how things are going.

Addison hasn't shown up at the hospital since season 8, but she has been known to fly in for emergency cases. We think Shonda and fans alike would love to have Kate Walsh back for an episode or 2, so if she's game, we think it'll happen. It would be a great way to get follow-up info on the Private Practice characters, too.

It's been a really long time since we've seen Erica Hahn. The cardio legend hasn't been present since season 5 and she wasn't all that happy when she left. While giving her a small spot in the final season would be fun for old school fans, it wouldn't be as important as bringing some of the others back.

After a truly embarrassing first run at the hospital, Leah Murphy was rightfully fired. However, 3 seasons later she showed up in much better form. She had improved her craft and we were actually really happy to see her succeeding. That being said, if they want to have her come back, we don't think it'd be too hard.

Molly is Lexie's sister and Meredith's half-sister. She's the only member of the Grey clan left after Meredith, so it's pretty bizarre that the writer's haven't found a way to sneak her in already. After all, there's nothing they like more thansurprise family reunions for Meredith. We thinking it would be fitting to have her show up for a farewell.
