Venture Lab Technology Entrepreneurship OAP 2012 – AZNatives
Edgar Vinyard, a 92 year old legally blind military veteran (and grandfather to our team lead Ryan Riedy) experiences problems with depth perception and other issues that make certain daily activities complicated. One of these problems is difficulty eating, resulting in constant spilling of his food. This is where the concept of the Swivel Spoon was developed. Ryan observed that the difficulty his grandfather was facing was causing him anxiety, embarrassment, and overall discomfort. After many instances of observing this issue, Ryan decided that something could be created to assist Edgar and other individuals that experience similar problems. The Swivel Spoon is envisioned to increase the quality of life for individuals that have disabilities such as vision impairment, illnesses such as Parkinson #39;s Disease, and elderly people in general that have impaired motor skills. After initially conducting 13 face to face interviews, we were able to interview 12 additional individuals for a total sample size of 25. The overall feedback from all 25 people interviewed was positive. All 25 interviewees agreed that our concept was a “good idea” and perceived it to be marketable. The majority of our sample size were found to have no use for the Swivel Spoon for personal use; however, 11 people did know someone that could benefit from the product. These 11 people also confirmed that they would buy this product as a gift for a loved one. This created an interested find.
