Beaches in Rye need attention

September 30, 2013 2:00 AM

Who would have thought a day at the beach could raise such angst, but even with summer over, there are many concerns about who uses the beach and how, if they have a dog with them, whether they surf, and where they park.

It's enough to ask, can't we all just get along?

There are legitimate concerns with the beaches in Rye. Public consumption of alcohol can lead to other problems, especially littering, and there seems to be a growing amount of trash left on our fine shores. That's a shame.

An ounce of prevention, as it relates to open containers, and trash, is worth a pound of prevention. With respect to the law, a discreetly consumed beer is not going to turn Rye's shores into a honky-tonk Hampton Beach of the 1970s. The problem arises when a beer becomes public intoxication. It worsens when the publicly intoxicated care not to clean up their mess. Arriving at the beach to find crushed beer cans, cigarette butts and snack food wrappers blowing over what should be pristine sands is depressing.

Let's not just blame those who imbibe. Litter seems to get worse by the year in general. It's frustrating given the greatest level of environmental awareness in the history of the world.

The occasional person who strips out of beach or surf wear to put on other clothes, revealing partial nudity, does little to enhance a family beach trip. We would assume those who swap clothes shoreside are but a few among the tens of thousands who hit the beach on beautiful summer days.

It is the tens of thousands who visit the beach that make us worry what the angst is all about. There is no easy solution to the beach's popularity as there are a lot more of us living in the region than 20 years ago.

We believe a measured approach to restricting and/or charging for parking is needed. When so many of us fight against waning access to waterfront and beaches, further restricting access is troubling. A recent meeting held by local state lawmakers in Rye included worries about the growing number of pedestrians and traffic congestion along the shore.

Among the ideas for dealing with parking and congestion was to install parking meters on Ocean Boulevard and ban parking on one side of the road. State Sen. Nancy Stiles confirmed state law would allow Rye to install parking meters along Ocean Boulevard if it so chooses.

Just How Smart Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is the Holy Grail of computer scienceand, for that matter, science fiction. But just how far have we come?

In this video, Luciano FloridiProfessor of Philosophy and Ethics of Information at the University of Oxfordexplores the current state of AI. The nub of his argument boils down to one big question: have we already created machines which are on their way to being truly intelligent, or have we just changed the world to allow dumb machines to behave intelligently? Watch and find out. [YouTube]

EXCLUSIVE: USC’s McNair aerospace center gets $1 million donation

COLUMBIA, SC A television network executive will donate $1 million on Monday to endow scholarships for the University of South Carolinas new aerospace research program named after Challenger astronaut Ronald McNair.

Marva Smalls, a Florence native and USC graduate who is an executive vice president at Viacom and Nickelodeon, said the scholarships will go to minority students from the states Pee Dee region majoring in computer science and engineering.

Hopefully, we are creating the next generation of leaders and scientists, said Smalls, 56. This was a great chance to give back to my hometown.

Like McNair, Smalls grew up in the Pee Dee, the northeast corner of the state that is rural outside of the Florence and the Myrtle Beach area. Smalls now works in New York but has homes in Charleston and Florence, where her 89-year-old mother lives.

Smalls said she wants to give Pee Dee students a chance to get the high-tech, high-paying jobs that come with the states growing aerospace business. Boeing opened its only jet manufacturing plant outside the Seattle area in North Charleston in 2011.

Smalls said she met McNair, a Lake City native killed in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986, while working as the chief of staff for then-U.S. Rep. Robin Tallon, a Florence Democrat.

It will be a continuation of his legacy, and I believe that students will identify with him having come from a rural area, she said. We will create a new caliber of scholars that will come from the Pee Dee area.

Smalls becomes the third woman to donate more than $1 million to the USC aerospace center.

Darla Moore, a Lake City financier who is USCs biggest benefactor, kick-started the center in 2011 with a $5 million donation. Anita Zucker, a Charleston businesswoman who is the richest person in the state, gave $5 million last year.

Women have a strong and innate sense to give back, Smalls said. I have a passion for helping kids.

Magellan Aerospace-built MAC-200 Bus Successfully Launched on CASSIOPE

TORONTO , Sept. 30, 2013 /CNW/ - Magellan Aerospace announced today the first launch of its MAC-200 Bus on the Cascade SmallSat and IOnospheric Polar Explorer (CASSIOPE) satellite from the Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA on a Falcon 9 launch vehicle.

CASSIOPE is a multi-purpose mission carrying 8 unique instruments to conduct space environment research (collectively called e-POP) and advanced telecommunications technology demonstration (termed Cascade).

Mr. James S. Butyniec , President and CEO of Magellan Aerospace said, "The successful launch of CASSIOPE yesterday is a great accomplishment that we celebrate with the Canadian Space Agency, MacDonald , Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (MDA), and all of the Canadian industrial contributors and scientists who contribute to advancing Canada's space technology capabilities."

In 2005, Magellan won a competitive process to develop a satellite bus with a flexible architecture that could be tailored to meet mission-specific requirements for Canada's future space missions including CASSIOPE. The MAC-200 bus was designed to accommodate a range of mission requirements, instrument interfaces, and launcher environments in a cost effective manner. The MAC-200 utilizes a fully redundant cross-strapped architecture that is capable of providing high reliability for mission lifetimes of more than 7 years.

The CASSIOPE satellite bus was designed and built in Magellan Aerospace, Winnipeg . Magellan then supported both the integration and test of the e-Pop and Cascade payloads in Winnipeg and the spacecraft level testing at the David Florida Laboratory (DFL) in Ottawa, ON under contract to MDA.

In addition to the design, manufacture, and AIT of the bus for CASSIOPE, Magellan also designed and developed the in-flight computer and custom-build data handling card, flight software, mechanical and electrical ground support equipment, Command and Data Handling (C&DH) unit, elements of the e-POP payload, as well as the mechanically-designed deployable booms.
